Alice Cooks and Randy Buys Shirts

We invited Rosa, Jimena and Pedro and their kids Augustin, Amelia and Arturo to dinner on Tuesday evening.  It was interesting cooking a full dinner in a different kitchen.  First is the translation of centigrade to Fahrenheit and back again for the oven.  Then, there is the matter of trying to make do with a quite limited supply of pots and tools.  Jimena brought fresh limes and ice to make pisco sours.  We found a blender and a citrus juicer but no sugar!  We improvised with a combination of honey and non-sugar sweetner.  Still tasted pretty good drinking them sitting on the balcony watching the sunset.

The kids enjoyed running around the apartment and especially the balcony, and the cartoons we put on the TV for them.  What a fun evening and the dinner has given us several days of leftovers to eat, which we have been doing.

The kids at dinner - they ate very well and seemed to enjoy the pasta

Rosa and Pedro carry their plates of pasta and carrots (carrots in Chile are fantastic!)

The men eye the assortment of cakes from the excellent America bakery in Vina - and they tasted as good as they looked

Yummy!
Bonus - walking to lunch the next day (Wednesday, Randy's working day) near the university we happened upon a local mens shirt making shop.  This venerable establishment sold a variety of bold colors in their tailored mens shirts.  We bought an assortment of four - one each for Alexander and Nick and two for Randy.  It was a throwback to earlier times that is no longer found in the U.S.

Randy, Jimena and Rosa on the streets of Valparaiso - yes, the weather is always fantastics

Alice's lunch was interesting that day - typical bar dish of French fries topped with shrimp, mushrooms and asparagus scrambled with eggs.  Not really that delicious except the fries were pretty tasty.
